Light and Shadow: A Multi-functional Office Space

Creating a Mature Atmosphere Through Contrast and Symmetry

The office design by Tuo Ying Design Company offers a unique and multi-functional space for staff and guests. Through the skillful manipulation of textures, colors, and lighting, the office exudes a sense of integrity and sophistication. With its clever use of contrast and symmetrical beauty, this design creates a visually comfortable and aesthetically pleasing workplace.

This office serves as more than just a place for work. It provides a resting and dining area for staff, as well as a reception room for meetings with guests. To welcome visitors, the designer has utilized changes in textures and lights to create a mature atmosphere. By contrasting light wooden colors with cold grey tones, the open office is divided into two separate areas. Lines, frames, and lights are strategically placed to enhance the symmetrical beauty of the space.

The meeting area and the resting area are defined separately and clearly, even without physical walls. The meeting area is adorned with mid-light wooden textures, maintaining a consistent tone and using forms to enrich the details. Striped columns on the walls add a sense of linear movement, while the hollow-out ceiling brings comfort and pleasantness to the space.

One of the unique aspects of this design is the use of stone material scraps. In an effort to maximize the use of stone materials and reduce waste, recycled and reused stone scraps are incorporated throughout the office. This not only adds a touch of sustainability to the design but also allows guests to appreciate the beauty of these materials in a new context.

Creating a visually appealing and functional office space comes with its challenges. The designers had to find a balance between rugged textures and soft fabrics, contrasting and softening the overall masculinity of the design. Wall washer lighting from top to bottom enhances the bright design, while also showcasing the unique undulating light and shadow created by the stone material scraps.

This project was completed in October 2020 in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The design team, led by Sandy Weng and Max Hsieh, successfully transformed an open space into a well-rounded workplace that promotes productivity and creativity. Their ingenious configuration of materials and lighting has not only created a visually stunning office but also advocates for sustainable and smart design.

Light and Shadow has been recognized for its excellence in design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and resourcefulness. Light and Shadow's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology has contributed to quality of life improvements, making it a truly remarkable space.
